In 1992, Palomar High School’s Scholarship Program was non-existent, and few organizations offered scholarships to a continuation school for “at-risk” students. Palomar High School students often struggle with not only being behind on credits but also coming from poverty-stricken neighborhoods. They deal with issues typical for at-risk students, such as unstable home environments, lack of access to basic resources, and exposure to crime and violence. Despite these challenges, many of these students demonstrate remarkable resilience and determination, making the support provided by Palomar’s programs even more critical.
Palomar High School offers alternative educational opportunities for our students. We offer flexible schedules, smaller class sizes, and additional support to help students complete their high school education and earn their diplomas. Although continuation schools are gaining more traction, few organizations recognize these students who have turned their lives around. Our students deserve the chance to continue their education at the college or vocational school level, as they have overcome significant obstacles and need support to move to the next level after high school.
The first scholarship at Palomar High was awarded in 1994, with the Admiral Don Baird Memorial Scholarship established by a Palomar teacher in memory of Admiral Baird. Each year, the number of scholarships earned by Palomar students has steadily increased. By 2003, 40 scholarships were awarded, it jumped to 52 awards in 2007, and a record seventy-five in 2010!
The Scholarship Program is driven by the Board of Directors of the Palomar Scholarship Foundation, all of whom have been associated with Palomar High and understand the school’s culture and students. The Board encourages community organizations to sponsor scholarships for deserving students, which can be used for college education, vocational training/trade schools, books, supplies, college fees, and computer expenses.
Palomar High also offers various programs to prepare students for college. The school has partnered with Southwestern College to provide college preparation courses where students can earn college credit.
The success of these programs is evident in the achievements of previous scholarship winners, who have attended and graduated from institutions such as the San Diego Community College district, Southwestern College, Grossmont College, University of Phoenix, National University, San Diego State University, UCSD, USD, NYU, and UC Berkeley. The scholarships awarded by the Palomar Scholarship Foundation have created a cultural shift at Palomar High, where many more students now consider and pursue the “college path.” The school’s transformation since 1992 has made the college option a reality for many students, and continued support and encouragement will help maintain and grow this success.
