About Brenda:

Brenda Reid, a proud native of South San Diego, has dedicated nearly two decades of her life to serving students within the Sweetwater Union High School District. A graduate of Southwest High, she has always felt a deep connection to her community. Brenda’s professional journey has consistently centered around Alternative Education, a passion that aligns seamlessly with her current role on the board of the Palomar High School Scholarship Foundation. Currently, she is also a student at San Diego State University, where she is pursuing a degree in Mathematics with the ambition of becoming a math teacher. Within the foundation, Brenda’s primary focus is outreach and fundraising, essential components that ensure the scholarship program’s sustainability and growth.
Her motivation to become involved with the Palomar High School Scholarship Program is rooted in a profound belief in the potential of all students, particularly those who are credit deficient and often labeled as “at-risk.” Brenda firmly believes that these students deserve the chance to succeed and continue their education beyond high school. Her commitment to this cause is unwavering, driven by the understanding that education can be a powerful equalizer, opening doors to opportunities that might otherwise remain closed.
Brenda’s association with Palomar High School began in 2019 when she started working as an Instructional Assistant. This transition came after her previous position with the SUHSD Learning Centers was cut, a program that was dedicated to helping credit-deficient students at their home schools. Faced with this change, Brenda knew she wanted to continue working in an alternative high school setting, where she could directly support students who face a myriad of challenges, whether they be personal, academic, or socio-economic. Since 2022, she has taken on additional roles at Palomar High School as the Library Media Technician, in charge of textbooks and the library. Additionally, she serves as the Community Relations Facilitator, helping with parent engagement by acting as a liaison between parents and guardians and the school, as well as representing the school at the district level.
Her decision to support the students of Palomar High School specifically is deeply personal. Brenda wants to give back to the community she grew up in and help the students who are often referred to as the “forgotten middle.” These are the students who, for various reasons, fall through the cracks of the traditional education system. They are not necessarily the top achievers or the most troubled, but they are at risk of being overlooked. Brenda’s dedication to these students stems from her desire to ensure they receive the attention, support, and opportunities they deserve.
The most rewarding aspect of Brenda’s involvement with the scholarship foundation is witnessing the joy and relief on students’ faces when they are informed that they have been awarded a scholarship. “Seeing kids light up when we inform them that they are receiving one is just so amazing,” she says. Being part of the reason these students can continue their education is incredibly fulfilling for Brenda, reinforcing her commitment to the foundation’s mission.
Looking to the future, Brenda has high hopes and aspirations for the scholarship program at Palomar High School. She wants to see more students apply for scholarships, emphasizing that “FREE MONEY IS GOOD MONEY!” Brenda is passionate about increasing awareness of the opportunities available through the scholarship program and ensuring that every eligible student takes advantage of these resources.
